Help Us All Stay Healthy this School Year:
Families should continue to refer to the symptom checklist and keep children home accordingly when they are showing viral symptoms. While we have relaxed our threshold for allowing symptomatic students in school, we still need to use diligence in making sound decisions regarding when it is appropriate to come to school.
When Should Your Student Stay Home?
- Temperature over 100 degrees
- Diarrhea which cannot be managed
- Vomiting within the last 24 hours
- Persistent cough or difficulty breathing
- Multiple symptoms present from the checklist
- Illness preventing child from participating comfortably in activities
- Illness requiring respiratory treatments such as frequent nebulizer treatments
When Can Your Student Return to SChool?
- Symptoms have significantly improved and no additional symptoms have developed
- Fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications
- Vomit & diarrhea free for 24 hours
- If tested positive for COVID-19, student will have to stay out of school for a minimum of five days
When Should Your Student be Seen by a Physician for Symptoms?
- Fever (persistent, returning after abating, appears later in an illness)
- Respiratory Distress (wheezing, accessory muscle usage/retractions, nose flaring, sweating)
- Symptoms have significantly improved and no additional symptoms have developed
- Sore throat with fever and WITHOUT significant runny nose or cough can be a sign of strep and should be tested
- Concern for ear infection
- Decrease in appetite & concern for dehydration
We continue to follow current MA DPH recommendations for COVID-19 Isolation and Exposure Guidance for Children and Staff in Child Care, K-12, Out-of-School Time (OST) and Recreational Camp/Program Settings. Return to school decisions for other illnesses including flu, RSV, and common cold virus are made in consultation with our Mansfield Public Schools nursing staff and in line with best practices from the Department of Early Education and Care supported by the Massachusetts Department of Health.
